What is a clutch?

Vehicles with a manual gearbox will have a clutch to allow the driver to change gear by pressing on the pedal. A clutch is mechanical device inside the gearbox which transfers the rotational power from the engine to the wheels

A clutch is made up of three parts:

• Clutch Plate
• Pressure Plate
• Flywheel

Signs of a clutch requiring investigation are detailed below:

• Clutch pedal being spongy, sticky or loose when the clutch pedal is pressed down
• Squeaking noise when the clutch pedal is pressed down.
• Difficulty changing the gears (this can also be down to gearbox issues)
• A clutch slipping – loss of acceleration

Clutch tips

We advise any driver of a manual vehicle to prevent riding the clutch pedal. Riding the clutch refers to the clutch pedal being partially engaged. For example, resting your foot on the clutch pedal. This results in the clutch being unable to engage fully with the flywheel causing premature wear on the clutch plate and flywheel.
